چکیده

The concentration of airborne virulent R. equi is closely correlated with the prevalence of R. equi disease on endemically affected farms. Virulent R. equi is certainly aerosolised in association with dust, but foals are also an important source of airborne virulent R. equi as they breathe off high concentrations in exhaled air. Both clinically ill and asymptomatic foals have high concentrations of virulent R. equi in their breath and thus may be an important source of bacteria for susceptible foals. Associations between the ecology of virulent Rhodococcus equi and the epidemiology of R. equi pneumonia on Australian thoroughbred farms.

The ecology of virulent strains of Rhodococcus equi on horse farms is likely to influence the prevalence and severity of R. equi pneumonia in foals. This study examined the association between the ecology of virulent R. equi and the epidemiology of R. equi pneumonia by collecting air and soil samples over two breeding seasons (28 farm-year combinations) on Thoroughbred breeding farms with diffe...

Rhodococcus equi isolation from sputum of patients with suspected tuberculosis.

Rhodococcus equi has emerged as an opportunistic pathogen associated with pulmonary, invasive or systemic infections in immunocompromised patients. We report the identification of 51 R. equi isolates found in sputum samples of 546 individuals suspected to have pulmonary tuberculosis in two Public Health Hospital Units in Brazil. The epidemiology of R. equi infection as well as the phenotypic id...

Detection of vapN in Rhodococcus equi isolates cultured from humans

Rhodococcus equi can cause severe infections in people, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. The R. equi virulence plasmids (vap) encoding vapA and vapB are linked to development of infections in domestic animals. Recently, a novel virulence plasmid, vapN, was identified in isolates cultured from cattle, but its prevalence or significance in human R. equi infections has not been exten...

Epidemiology of Rhodococcus equi Foal Pneumonia

The epidemiology of Rhodococcus equi foal pneumonia is changing and remains ill-defined. Few foal-specific or farm-specific factors have been correlated with occurrence of this disease. The density of mares and foals and the airborne concentration of virulent isolates of R. equi are associated with the disease, but a causal relationship has not been established for either factor. Author’s addre...

Molecular epidemiology of Rhodococcus equi of intermediate virulence isolated from patients with and without acquired immune deficiency syndrome in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

We investigated the prevalence of virulent Rhodococcus equi in clinical isolates from 69 sporadic cases (60 men, 8 women, and 1 patient of unknown sex) in Chiang Mai, Thailand, between 1993 and 2001. Fifty were human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) positive, 3 were HIV negative, and HIV status was unknown for 16. Fifty-two (75%) of 69 isolates were strains of intermediate virulence that contained ...
